Anita From the scene of the fire

The Mail Tribune has complete coverage of the fire that destroyed homes along Oak Knoll Drive at www.mailtribune.com/oakknollfire. Andrew Eckerson, who is the web editor of the Daily Tidings (and a roguecurrent member) created a panorama of the destruction. Check out his series of photos at the top of the page, and keep track of the stories, maps, photos and videos from the ravaged… Continue

Larry Reavis Absolute Insensitivity

I am aghast at the revelation that some of South Medford's students will not be permitted to attend the new South Medford High School come next month. While I'm sure they'll be appreciative of the extra room at the old school, being treated as pariahs is sure to have an emotional impact on them. The insensitivity exhibited by the school district is simply astounding. Dr. Long......might you consider some way to integrate these young men and women into the new school?

Watch Energy Two different descriptions of our current economy -- reaction to an editorial in the Mail Tribune.

1. Continuing growth of our population and wealth is the natural trend. Events since 2007 amount to nothing more than a brief reversal. Sooner or later we will get back on the upward track, and we should base our decisions on that expectation.

2. For decades we have lived beyond our means, becoming increasingly dependent on imports, especially of energy in the form of petroleum and now natural gas. We have borrowed heavily against the future with consumer debt, backed largely by the inf… Continue

Victor Rooney Middle Section of the Upper Rogue River Trail

This section of the Rogue River Trail extends from North Fork Resevoir, approximately 1/2 mile south of the Prospect Ranger Station, and north about 12 miles to Union Creek.

It is very scenic, surrounded by old growth trees and beautiful hardwood foliage, especially in the early fall.

The trail is long, but of very slight slope, and there are several places one can get picked up at river crossings, such as River Bridge Campground, Woodruff Picnic area and Union Creek resort.

Watch Energy "FDIC acts swiftly after failure of Grants Pass bank"

This story by Stacy D. Stumbo of the Grants Pass Daily Courier appeared on p. 10A of yesterday’s Mail Tribune (Monday, July 26, 2010). The MT provides no link to it online. The timing of this story with my blog post from Sunday was only a coincidence, but it provides a very local example of just what I was talking about. Here are some excerpts from it: “With no advance notice given to the public, the Oregon Department of Consumer and Business Services on Friday closed the Home Valley Bank’s fiv… Continue

Janis Hunt Johnson Southern Oregon Healer and Musicians Team Up to Explain How Scientific Prayer Brings Healing

At a time when many people are struggling with the fear of disease, lacking health insurance, and wondering how to pay for healthcare, Medford-based spiritual healer Janis Hunt Johnson offers a totally different way of dealing with the healthcare crisis.

Johnson proposes, "What if every time we had a problem — no matter how big or how small — we turned to God in prayer first, instead of as a last resort?" She contends that scientific prayer is an effective way to stay healthy, an

Watch Energy Another dip in the Great Recession?

Elizabeth Warren, who has played a major role in the creation of the new Consumer Protection Agency, and Wall Street Journal reporters Carrick Mollenkamp and Lingling Wei are predicting another real-estate crisis. This time it’s in commercial properties, and it looks big enough to create the second notch in a W-shaped recession.

The PBS program “Need to Know” aired an interview with Warren on July 16. You can see it at… Continue

Watch Energy Rare earth elements? Who cares about them?

We had better start paying attention to them. Expensive advertising promises technological miracles that will save us from our energy predicament, and many people seem to buy that message. We need to recognize the difference between temporary, small-scale advances and those that will hold up in the long term on a massive scale.

Here’s a news story about a major obstacle to our becoming energy-independent by going green:… Continue
