Hi Linda. You're seeing a lot of Italy and parts of France in one trip? Wow. Are you really skipping Rome? I know Florence, Rome and even Pompeii. I've rented cars. They're great for getting around the countryside and to towns not served by trains. They're awful in the cities, including Florence. The trains are fast, convenient and comfortable. Take them where ever you can. The Italian people are wonderful. Have fun.

We are flying into Florence and then traveling to/around Pompeii, the Amalfi Coast, Marseilles, Burgundy and Normandy. If anyone has experience with these locales and trains, rental cars and ferries connecting them, we would appreciate your recommendations.

G'day mate from Grants Pass.. I love to travel! I have been to many places; Australia twice, hong kong, india, singapore, fiji, candada, mexico and the states :)
I am the queen of budget travel as I love to do it but the cost can be expensive.
I Have learned that the only thing that stops us from doing the things that others enjoy are ourselves. "I can't" isn't in my vocabulary cause " I can" :)

Hi, everyone. I'm Roy. I live in Ashland. I like traveling in Italy. I don't go on tours. I just shop for cheap flights and go where I want to go when I get there.

I used to drive down to San Francisco to try to get a cheaper flight, but the last couple of times I've discovered it's close to a wash after you pay for the gas. These days, I just fly out of the Medford Airport.

we went on a cruise that called on a Costa Rican port. one daytrip was to a plantation up in the mountains, it was beautiful, i will look up details, have you gone already ? did you enjoy it ?

we just came back from 6 weeks in Palm Springs, which was my favorite place to get out of the cold, until we went to Tucson, we just loved that city....a great place to be a snowbird !

We are planning a spring trip to Croatia and the Dalmatian Coast. Does anyone have any suggestions or experiences to share?

We really made it to New England. A bit sooner than leaves changing so we rented car in Boston after a couple days wandering about and headed "North." Ended up in Canada, headed over to Nova Scotia on ferry...What a pleasant area to visit. Digby Nova Scotia and Annapolis in 2 day turn around. Next time pay to take the car with us.....

Heading back into Main and then into New Hampshire and Vermont as we wind our way back to Boston to fly home on 1st. Lots of fun stories and kindness to report. Got off ferry in Digby Nova Scotia, nice person overheard us talking about being on foot and gave us ride to visitors center. Visitors center folks helped us find a room and gave us a ride the rest of the way....no one would accept gratuity for their time.

We took local bus to Annapolis (first city in Canada) and missed bus back. A lovely Australian women who was visiting and camping her way all over the area offered to give us a ride back to Digby (28 miles). We had a truly pleasant conversation and made it back in time to catch taxi ($12) to ferry (about five miles from town). Anyway, nice visit and lovely people. Leaves are now starting to change in earnest as we continue wandering south/southwest.

See we just missed the fire. Our home is on North Roxy and the kids (adults) phoned us as they were being evacuated. it was the perfect example of not knowing what to do. my daughter said she was thinking a mile a minute and had no idea what to grab. My son in law (close enough anyway) is an IT person...I said just grab the CPU and the files on the 3rd shelf...he said what's a CPU?

Unfortunately people in general aren't experienced in these frantic situations. Well, the computer had all family pix scanned onto it and the files are my assemblage of those necessary documents to carry on...birth certificates, car titles, etc.

Bev,

You might want to consider staying in Sturbridge, MA. There are many motels there as Old Sturbridge Village is a major tourist destination. It’s an hour’s drive West of Boston. If you are a history buff you will find Old Sturbridge Village very interesting. If you are planning on visiting the area during foliage season I suggest making reservation now.

Rosalie: We have traveled to many continents over the years and have not checked bags since about 1993. We take one carry on each (along with smallish pack that serves as purse/light travel bag). I pack all purpose pants, shirts, sweater, light wind/rain coat, one longish black skirt....layer, layer, layer. I also take one extra pair of shoes. As we rarely stay in one town more than a cple /three nights it works really well. We have found washing facilities all over. For us the fun of traveling is in getting out and wandering about anyway. I have often not packed shampoo, etc as that can be purchased just about anywhere. I usually leave most of this stuff when I head home. It really doesn't cost too much more and is much more convenient than lugging "little bottles of stuff" all over.

Dick: We will be traveling to Boston, driving up into Montreal and back down (thru Adirondaks) into Mt. Vernon and then back to Boston (Wheh!) this Sept. Any suggestions for inexpensive accommodations, etc. are very welcome
