The Rogue Valley is a great place to eat. The group Thrive sponsors an annual Eat Local Challenge to encourage people to support local food producers. Participants in the event and anyone who loves locally produced food is welcome here.

The Eat Local Challenge promotes the consumption of locally produced foods. This year, a host of events is planned Sept. 11-20 at restaurants, grocery stores, growers markets, farms, wineries and elsewhere, organized by Thrive, food producers and restaurants.

This group is one place to make connections and share resources, recipes and more.

The Mail Tribune is also looking for readers who will share their experiences through a roguecurrent.com blog. Food editor and blogger Sarah Lemon will blog about her experiences over at www.mailtribune.com/wholedish and feature others who are willing to give it a shot, too.

When locavores talk about seasonal eating, I'm sure they mean dining on what is ripe and naturally available right now. But bread that's baked around Valentine's Day counts in my book, or my blog, actually.

In case you haven't heard, Joe Salatin, owner of Polyface Farms and a major focus of Micheal Pollan in his book, Omnivores Dilemma, will be in Medford on the 19th. Go to jclac.org for tix and info. Should be very interesting.

I bought some of the Horsepower Flour made from wheat grown at Hanley Farm at the Ashland Food Co-op. I haven't baked anything with it yet, but I'm excited to try out something this fresh and local. Plus I'm happy to support the Southern Oregon Historical Society, especially right now.

January doesn't feel like a great time to focus on local eating. Farmers' markets aren't running and most gardens are bare, but the good stuff is still out there.

This month's Oregon Healthy Living magazine features two articles on local food: One about local meat producers, and one about winter veggies available in stores now.

If your holiday travels take you to the coast, don't miss the Dungeness crab. On a pre-Christmas visit to Brookings, my husband and I stopped at the port to get some fresh crab. It doesn't get any fresher than that offered direct from the boats. Bounder's is the current name of the floating crab shack on the south end of the commercial boat basin. Crab was $3.75 a pound and you can get them cooked for 50 cents more apiece.

I think getting them cooked is well worth it. I don't want to hear crabs scrabbling around in the cooler while driving on on the twisty part of Highway 199 and I don't love the way they make the kitchen smell. Besides, it's more fun to hang out in the rain and listen to fishermen crack jokes while the crabs boil in an old beer keg over a propane burner. Bounder's even has a young pelican that comes begging for scraps. (For the record, the goofy bird rejected crab gills, some other weird guts and a Cheeto before finally giving up on the humans as a food source.)

While winter produce can be less than inspiring, I found something to get excited about -- turnip greens. When I was stocking up on root vegetables at the Rogue Valley Growers and Crafters Market, the tops on a bunch of turnips looked so good I had several ideas for cooking them. I finally settled on a pasta dish with braised greens, onions, garlic and cayenne from the garden, and it was delicious.

Turnip greens in the grocery store aren't common and are never that fresh and exciting, so they are definitely a local treat.

Just a quick link to share today for a national eat-local challenge happening this month: eatlocalchallenge.com.

As odd as a national local event sounds (right in there with jumbo shrimp), the point is everybody, everywhere, should give eating locally a try. I'm guessing the October date makes this a bit more of a challenge, especially in northern locations.

Eatlocalchallenge.com looks like a fun resource, though, so I thought I would share it here. Top post right now is about heirloom pumpkins and squash, and I have seen many of the featured varieties at local markets here.

I just got back from a quick trip to Fox Run Farm. They have lots of varieties of apples and plan to make cider tomorrow, as well as loads of tomatoes, corn, melons, okra and other summer produce as well. And just for the Eat Local Challenge, they are offering customers a certificate for 10 percent off their next purchase. So go now and plan to go again later

I've added some Eat Local bloggage of my own.

Readers can find all the latest posts from all the bloggers on roguecurrent by clicking the blogs tab at the top of any page.

Bloggers can help readers find their local eating tales by tagging each entry with "eatlocal." The same tag can be used on photos or videos to help people keep track of all related stuff. I also have been assigning a tag of "food," too, because that seems like a more common interest people might search.
